You’re Ready for Summer but is Your RV?

Now that Memorial Day has come and gone, we’re getting ready for summer! There’s no denying that this has been an unusual last few months and people are ready to get out and enjoy themselves. But before you toss the family in the RV and take off, don’t forget to make sure to service your RV first.
The last thing you want is to have a problem while you’re on the road.

Prepping your RV for summer travel

It may be easy to remember things like restocking your kitchen cabinets and putting sheets and blankets back on the bed. But, what about the things you need to do to make sure your RV is operating at its best. Here are a few things that you should take a look at to get your RV ready:

Check the tires

Make sure you pay attention to your mileage and have the tires rotated if you need to. And, you may want to have them replaced every 3 to 6 years. Keep a close eye on their condition so you can take care of any issues before they happen if possible. If your tires don’t need to be changed or rotated, you’ll still want to check the pressure in the tires before you head out on the road. And if you have a dually, remember that the outside tire may look good but behind it, the tire may need attention.

Check the brakes

After your RV has been sitting for awhile, you’re going to want to check your brakes. It’s possible that they have locked up while sitting over the winter months.

Check your batteries

If you’re RV has been in storage and you removed the batteries, you’ll need to reconnect them. But first, check for signs of corrosion. You can clean them if needed. Then, check the charge before reinstalling. If you didn’t remove the batteries, you’ll still want to check them over and make sure they’re properly charged before using the RV.

Check and fill the propane tanks

You also want to make sure that there are no leaks in your propane tanks. You can check them by putting a mixture of soapy water around the valves. If there is a leak, you’ll notice bubbles being formed. Once you know the tanks are good, make sure you fill them so you don’t have to worry about running out on your trip.

Check the seals

Take time to look over the seals on your RV slides. Remember that there are seals on both the inside and outside. You want to make sure that they aren’t sticking. You may need to lubricate them.

Do some cleaning

If your RV has been sitting, you’re probably going to want to do some detail cleaning on the inside and outside. Think along the lines of “spring cleaning”. Dust has most likely been accumulating. And, chances are there’s a bit of a smell from things being closed up. Open the windows, check for signs of rodents, wipe things down and freshen it up. Give it a good cleaning on the exterior too, especially if your RV has been stored outside and uncovered.
While you’re working on the exterior, check the roof. Look for cracks around the seals or any signs that could lead to leaks.

Check the water system

If you winterized your RV, you’ll need to flush the system to rid it of the any anti-freeze. And, before filling your water tanks, you’ll also want to sanitize them and clean out the lines.
