If you’re interested in buying a new 5th wheel or trailer RV, you’re probably wondering about the towing situation. Here’s our towing advice for new RVers in California.
Our best advice for towing in California:
- 1. Never ever tow over the manufacturer’s recommended capacities.
- 2. Triple towing, such as towing a trailer and a boat at the same time with a truck, is illegal in California.
- 3. Heed the 55mph towing speed limit, the fines for the tickets are pretty steep!
- 4. Don’t exceed the tongue weight of the trailer. It’s pretty obvious when a tongue is overloaded and weight has not been distributed due to bowing at the hitch, which looks like this:
- 5. Always give extra room for braking.
- 6. Before driving off, make sure brakes are not engaged on the towed vehicle.
- 7. Be aware of the trailers height, don’t end up like this trailer!
- 8. Don’t be afraid to ask around for towing advice as a new RVer, plenty of seasoned RVers will have tons of advice and are willing to share so you don’t make the same mistakes they did!
