Taking time to figure out what your needs and wants are before searching RV for sale California will help ensure you get what you need and want.

Why you want to prepare before you shop

It’s easy to get excited about buying an RV and run to the dealership to start looking. But remember in many ways, buying an RV is like buying a house. It’s exciting to go to an open house, but you need to know what your needs are to choose the right one. Otherwise, you could end up getting excited when you see something you like and make a purchase that you later regret.

Types of RVs

The first thing you need to understand before purchasing an RV is the different types of RVs available:

Class A – This type of RV resembles a bus. They have large front windows that provide great visibility as you drive. And the interior offers many of the comforts and luxurious of home. They are around 30 to 40 feet in length. Typically they have at least one or two slides that provide additional space once you’re stopped and set up in camp.

Class B – This type of RV is also known as the camper van. It’s the same size as a full-size van. While this limits the amount of space available, it makes it easy to drive and is popular for those who like to get off the beaten path. These are very popular among the younger generation of RVers.

Class C – Many people recognize these RVs because of the cab-over style. The space above the cab is typically used for additional sleeping or storage. This is a smaller motorhome than the Class A RVs but they provide many of the same amenities. They also provide the option for multiple slideouts to provide additional space.

Travel Trailer – Travel trailers come in a variety of sizes. There are smaller ones that you can easily pull with your family SUV and larger ones with multiple slides that provide features similar to a Class A.

Fifth Wheel – This type of RV requires the owner to have a truck in order to tow it. You need a hitch in the bed of your truck. These RVs are known for how spacious they are. There are even some models with as many a six slides. They provide the benefit of being able to unhitch the RV and have your truck to drive.

Questions to help you find the right RV

In order to help you identify the right RV for you and your lifestyle, here are some important things to consider before finding an RV for sale:

How many people are traveling with you?

Your RV needs are different based on your travel party. If you’re a solo RVer, you may not need as much room as a family of six traveling together. Take time to consider the size of the group you’re traveling with right now and if that might change in the next few years. For example, it might be just you and your spouse right now but if you plan on having a baby soon then it might change the amount of space you want.

How do you want to move it?

Do you have a truck that can tow a travel trailer or fifth wheel? If not then you might want to consider a motorhome. But if you really like the idea of being able to unhitch the RV and still have a vehicle then you may prefer a travel trailer. Think about what your comfort level is in driving an RV along with what your current and future vehicle needs will be.

How do you like to vacation/travel?

Are you about having an adventure and finding new places to go? Or do you like to have most of the comforts of home even while you’re traveling? Understanding this part of yourself can help you know what you should look for in an RV. If you like to get away from the crowds and see untouched nature at its finest then you’ll want to make sure your RV is ready for boondocking. But if you like to stay in resort-like RV campgrounds, you may prefer a Class A.

How much time will you spend in the RV?

Your RV needs may be different if you plan on becoming a full-time RVer compared to taking the occasional trip where you only use the RV to sleep in. If you plan on spending a lot of time inside the RV and love baking, then make sure you have the kitchen you need to do what you enjoy. If you and your family are going to be doing school and work from the RV, you may want a dedicated desk space. And if you like to unwind each day by watching TV or drinking a glass of wine in front of a fireplace, make sure your RV gives you that option.

Finding your perfect RV

Remember as you start RV shopping that there is no “right” RV that meets the needs of every RVer. But there are RVs that are going to be right for you and your specific needs. Make sure you understand what your needs are so you can find the right one to start your RVing journey.
