Class B Vans: Perfect for Millennials?

Millennials just can’t seem to stay out of the headlines. The generation continually makes the news for being unlike the previous generation. They didn’t want to jump into a mortgage as soon as other generations. They didn’t want to commit to a 9 to 5 the way previous generations did. And overall, it just seemed that millennials had a zest for wanting to live life by their rules instead of following the path that was laid out by those that went before. And that has transitioned millennials into being huge fans of RV life!

Why millennials make great RVers

Long before the pandemic hit, millennials were wanting to work remotely. They grew up in the tech age where they could see the possibilities and opportunities that existed. They knew that there were plenty of tools in place to make it possible for them to work from home while earning a living and getting to live more of a life they desired.

Many were already looking for remote work and freelance opportunities. When the pandemic hit, it gave them that chance. A Gallup poll conducted in late 2020 found that “The majority of remote workers are millennials: 52%, versus 29% of Gen Xers and 17% of baby boomers.” They got the chance that they wanted and they’ve taken it.

Millennials also set the FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) movement in motion. They don’t like the idea of waiting until they hit 65+ years old to have the freedom to start doing the things they want to do—like travel. Why let their best years pass them by while they sit in an office?

So instead, they’ve worked on setting themselves up as digital nomads that have the freedom to go where they want, when they want. And that’s why millennials have become great RVers.

Why Class B Camper Vans are a great fit for millennials

While there are plenty of options when it comes to RVs, there’s one that seems to stand out the most for millennials (and let’s not forget those older Gen Zers too!)—Class B.

Class B RVs are often referred to as Camper Vans. They are small RVs that are built on the chassis of a van. While this means that they are smaller than many of the other RV options, they come with some unique advantages that are appealing to the younger generations.

Camper Vans are easy to drive

Some people can be intimidated to drive around a large Class A motorhome. Others are leery of towing an RV behind their vehicle. You don’t have to worry about any of that if you’re driving a Class B. You can drive one as long as you’re able to drive a van. This makes parking and navigating much simpler when you’re getting started.

In fact, some people even use their Camper Vans as daily drivers. As the millennial generation is getting older and many have growing families, a Camper Van can be a great option for those long travel league competition weekends for the kids.

And, on top of being easy to drive, they’re easier to store. They can fit in many garages. You can also get away with keeping them in your driveway in neighborhoods that don’t allow RVs to be kept.

They can go almost anywhere

Not only are Camper Vans easier to drive, but they can also go many places that larger RVs can’t. Some Camper Vans, like the Winnebago Revel, were designed to make it possible for you to go offroad and off-grid. This is a benefit that many campers enjoy. With options for larger holding tanks and solar panels, some Camper Vans can give you the opportunity to go off the beaten path and have a rugged adventure. It’s something that you just can’t do with some of the larger RVs or towables.

Along with being able to go off the beaten path, Camper Vans are also great options for urban camping. If you want to go RVing through the city or spend time where you have a great WiFi connection to work from time to time, Camper Vans can look like regular vans. That means you can get away with parking them in places that other RVs aren’t going to be able to park.

Better gas mileage

You can save on gas mileage by driving a Camper Van, which makes sense if you think about the difference in size and weight when compared to other RVs. This can make it easier to pick up and travel where you want. You’ll be keeping the travel budget down.

Not only is this nice on your bank account, but it’s also better for the environment too.

They support the minimalist lifestyle

Younger generations are known for embracing the minimalist lifestyle. They would rather be out living life instead of collecting a bunch of material possessions. The limited space in a Camper Van means you have to pick and choose what you take with you, but that can be an advantage for someone that doesn’t want to be surrounded by just a bunch of “stuff”.

What to look for when buying a Camper Van

While buying a Camper Van might feel a lot like buying a car, remember that it’s not one and the same. Make sure you really look at the options of floorplans to choose the one that’s best for you. For example, if you live an active life and want the ability to bring your bike, surfboard, or other equipment with you, then you need to make sure you choose an RV that can accommodate it.

Make sure you think through sleeping spaces. You might be solo traveling most of the time, but will you want to be able to take a friend or two if you choose? Or, maybe it’s just you and your partner for the moment, but you’re hoping to add to your family soon. Choose the floorplan that will meet your needs now and any changes you may experience soon.
