5 Tips to Keep Your RV Toilet Tip-Top

The toilet is one of the features that make an RV a home. It’s a dividing line between mere camping, and the ability to fully live in your RV. Don’t neglect your RV toilet and let it become a major, stinking problem.

Tank Treatments

A tank treatment will break down toilet paper and waste that accumulates with usage. They are available in tablet and liquid forms. Routinely treating the tank will improve daily use, as well as extend the life of your toilet tank.

Keep the Bowl Clean

Your RV toilet may have a built-in sprayer, but if not, it doesn’t take a sophisticated tool to complete this task. An ordinary plastic cup next to the toilet will allow you to clean the bowl after each use. Spray or pour water around the bowl as it flushes. The only tough part about this task is remembering to do it every time.

RV Friendly TP

Using the appropriate toilet paper will greatly limit complications. It is easier on the septic system and can prevent clogs. It will also keep build-up from interfering with the tank sensor. Always use RV TP like this.

Reset Tank Sensor

Faulty readings on the tank sensor are a hassle. Here’s a nice trick for resetting the sensor of an RV toilet: drop 3-4 trays of ice cubes into the toilet. As the ice moves around and through the septic system they will dislodge anything stuck inside, along with clearing residue from the tank sensor.

Repair the Toilet Seal

The seal keeps water in the bowl, rather than the tank, and keeps the odors out of your RV. Old, hardened seals result in a leak that interrupts this process. Applying some plumber’s grease to the seal will lubricate it and get it working properly again.
